For the most part, the text is taken from Satish Chandra's History of Medieval India (second edition) and is used with his permission. The article begins with a brief historical introduction of Medieval India and its notable events, followed by an overview of the various dynasties that emerged in Indian history during this period. The article covers: As we all know, if we look at ancient Indian history we find that most ancient empires were founded by the 'Aryan race'. So it is natural for us to assume that medieval Indian history consisted mainly of events driven by Aryan races. But as we shall see as we go along, the Cholas and the Hoysala were Dravidians, who lived south of the Vindhya mountains. The Yadavas were an ancient tribe of India. The Kakatiyas were Telugus. The course of Indian history was determined not just by ‘Aryans’ but by a whole gamut of tribes and races that came into India from every direction. It is not necessary to mention them all here, but it is important for us to remember that the idea that there was only one race in India is entirely erroneous. Also, for many centuries, India was overshadowed by the great Mongol empires of the continent; first the Huns and then the Mongols, who were followed by Turco-Mongol dynasties. The invasion of Timur Leng also had an impact on Indian politics. We will see that cruelty of this invader has been exaggerated by historians. 'Medieval India' is not a fixed period of time—as are, say 'the Mauryas' or 'the Guptas'. There was no single 'medieval era'. Instead there were several periods of varying length over which medievalism prevailed. Of these, the most significant was between 1206 and 1526, when the Delhi Sultanate ruled India. However, this was not an uninterrupted period of time. Frequently, there were many successive kingdoms in India. When one kingdom fell, another rose. This happened mainly because of invasions from the continent, especially by the Turco-Mongols who came to India from western Asia in waves. They came principally under two Mongol adventurers: first Hulegu Khan the emperor of Persia (died 1265) and then his nephew Kublai Khan formerly supreme ruler of China (died 1294). cfa1e77820
